Put on the Armor of God in A Modern World

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
—Ephesians 6:10-13

The Bible tells us that God’s word is eternal, living, and everlasting (1 Peter 1:25; Psalm 119:160; 1 Peter 4:12) but we are living in a generation that is going further and further away from the truth. While things do change over time and often, a lot even, we have the instructions of God’s word to help lead and guide us and over the last few centuries, there have been new movements created to take us further away from God’s word but worse, God Himself.

Beginning during the 19th and 20th centuries, a movement began that tried to reconcile Christianity with the findings from science and other aspects of life and this movement is modernism. More so, modernism was a movement by people who lost their faith in God and the scriptures who attempted to convince others of their flawed and failed views. Modernism, which did catch on and had a large impact on society, gave way to a new movement later in the 20th century known as postmodernism.

Postmodernism attempts to give restitution to groups of individuals that were seen as being overlooked throughout history including women, people of different races, and people who lived different lifestyles such as homosexuals. Andy Crouch of Christianity Today International explains that postmodernism is a broad term focused on “the marginalized”, or the others mentioned above, and tends to have no real beliefs, stands for anything and everything, and even can mean nothing.

This is why having the armor of God on is so important because there is always something new attacking the faith of believers. Although we do not have all the answers; none of us do, the worldly will always come up with something that “suggests” and/or “reveals” just how wrong we are. Just as the modernism movement tried to connect Christianity and science together, the postmodern world does the same except goes to greater lengths to disprove the faith we carry and debunk the Word of God.

Therefore, in all that we do, we must cling to the Word of God and never forget that the enemy; Satan himself, is always raging battles against us. One of the main reasons why so many people are easy targets is they forget who they serve. Rather than living to please God, they look to please those around them and while we all want to be liked, we cannot forget that what God thinks of us is ultimately what matters as everything is in His hands including our eternal fate and from what I can see, eternity with God is much more desirable than a few years with those who will never accept us.

For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.”
—Proverbs 2:6-8
