Since becoming a Christian, I have thought a lot about the issue of science and Christianity and whether or not the two go together or they are exact opposites and do not belong anywhere near one another. After a lot of thought and research, I comprehend and understand that both science and faith can go hand in hand but science should never serve as the ultimate authority in which our lives are guided.
Different times I have given this response and while many do understand this, many others do not. The people who are unable to understand that my faith outranks science are dumbfounded at the idea of someone placing their lives in the hands of a man that created the world rather than a systematic study that explains ideas and concepts. It should come as no surprise that many intellectuals of science, astronomers, university and college professors, and atheists alike have tried to dispel the existence of God and while they try, not one have ever succeeded in doing so though their efforts are great which illustrates the Romans 1:22: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,”
In today’s society, we think of a fool as someone who is sense or misguided but the Bible regards a fool as someone who disregards the word of God. Many in the scientific world were taken back when world renowned physicist Michio Kaku concluded that we live in a world created by intelligence which is made by rules. Further, we are not here by chance by rather, the universe is a product of intelligent design and because science is based on certain criteria including “what’s testable, reproducible, and falsifiable” but there are some things; many things in fact, that cannot be tested, reproduced or falsified and this includes the existence of God (Kaku, 2018). In other words, based on the findings of Kaku, while nobody can prove one-hundred parent that God exists, nobody can prove that God doesn’t exist, either.
Scripture tells us that God is an intellectual being who has made a world, an universe, that is guides by rules and structured by order. Romans 11:34 reads “For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller?” God not only created the world and put it together just the way He desired, He gave us the reason and ability to reason and rationalize. Isaiah 1:18 reads “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
While God knows all things and never changes, this causes a big problem for many people because so many people want to rationalize everything down to the very last drop but we are limited in our understanding. 1 Corinthians 2:9 reads “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” One way of viewing this is trying to figure out the plan for our lives which is often the biggest question that each individual tries to answer.
Because we are limited in our grasp of knowledge and information, we either have to accept that we will never know everything or continue to try to figure everything out. Scripture clearly tells us that our minds have been darkened and is limited and this occurred during the fall of man which separated man from God. Ephesians 4:17-18 informs us “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:”
In my personal experiences with people who try so hard to disprove God, they typically become hostile. If their hostilities are not toward me then it’s certainly toward God and we are told as much in Romans 8:7: “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” In other words, these minds are governed by their flesh and because of the sin nature of man, they do not submit to God’s law and, therefore, become hostile as they do not understand God.
Unfortunately, the nature of man takes pride in many Earthly things like accomplishments and other things of this life and while there is nothing wrong with congratulations on a job well done, we do not need to put these achievements above God which is what typically happens. While I could go on and on for pages about such a deep and complex subject, it’s rather simple: our intellect, despite how high, is limited and on our own merits, we will never come to the real truth of God but in Christ, we are a new creation. 2 Corinithians 5:17 tells us that “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
As new creations, although we will not know everything, we do not have to know everything for we are one with Christ. Romans 12:2 instructs us “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” While intelligence is a gift from God, it has been perverted by the sin nature of man which we are born into but we can be transformed and humbled by the acceptance and grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:”-Ephesians 4:17-18
