God’s children here below are engaged in a battle for their lives and while the enemy is real and looks to do us in, the battle is already won and all we have to do is accept it. Christ died on the cross for us and by doing so, defeated the grave so we could have eternal life. In other words, He won the battle for us but we must be alert as we do have a real enemy—Satan, or the devil—and he does his best to get you to turn away from God’s ways.
Without question, Satan is cunning and very good at what he does and he is responsible for getting Adam and Eve to sin. Christ created them in innocence but since the fall of man, we have lived within a sinful nature so we can never let our guard down but we also can never become complacent. Although the battle is real and the enemy is always engaged, the general has already won the battle for the soldiers whereas we are the soldiers and Christ is the general.
While we do have a role in the battle, we are instructed to give Him the fight. This fight is the battle with Satan and it’s a war between good and evil. Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” With this scripture, Paul affirms that our battle as believers is indeed spiritual and not physical and the enemies that we face in battle, ultimately, are not people or objects.
Although the Devil may use flesh and blood and objects as part of his attack, our true opponent is not against people but sin. Sin is missing the mark or target and our target is Christ and we are to be Christ like, Isaiah 53:6 tells us that “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” One of the many great things of Christ is that even when we miss the mark, Christ takes it and puts it on Himself. God the Father is the one we sin again and the sins of man are collected by the Father and casted upon Christ and bundled together, as one, which is why the singular term, or number, iniquity is used.
It’s these sins that Christ bore from all people and it was a heavy burden, so heavy in fact that it was only God that could bear and pay the price. When we hear that God will fight our battles, He’s saying that He will take care of us. Philippians 4:19 is a verse that every Christian should remember: “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Too many people forget the part about according to his riches and by Christ Jesus as our minds, our souls, our hearts should want to do the things that Christ wants and when they are, they will be abundantly rewarded.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
